InteRDom Promotes Appreciation of Dominican Republic’s Natural Scientific Reserves

Ebano Verde National Park is a natural reserve for the endemic and timber-yielding green ebony tree. It is also home to a cloud forest, flora and fauna native to the island, as well as streams and basins of some of the most important rivers in the Dominican Republic.

The Ebano Verde scientific reserve is also home to many birds, among them the Cigüita (warbler finch) of Constanza, the parrot (papagayo), the parakeet, the chicuí (narrow-billed toady) and the talking parrot.

The park is located in the central region of the country in the La Vega province, on the outskirts of the city of Constanza. It covers a land area of 23.1 square kilometers, with its highest point being La Golondrina Mountain, at 1,505 meters. It borders Loma Casabito, Loma La Col and Loma La Sal, the source of the Camú River.

Participants in the InteRDom program have the opportunity to visit a well-marked and safe 7-kilometer path that runs through the cloud forest. The guided hike is full of marvels and endemic plant species, insects, amphibians and trees, including the Pinguicula casabitoana, the only carnivorous plant native to the Dominican Republic.

The Ebano Verde scientific reserve is also home to many birds, among them the Cigüita (warbler finch) of Constanza, the parrot (papagayo), the parakeet, the chicuí (narrow-billed toady) and the talking parrot.

The skilled environmental guides facilitate visitors’ comprehension of the place, while promoting its conservation and sustainable use of resources.

Constanza is noteworthy for having the coldest temperatures in all of the Dominican Republic; it can drop to 68 degrees in the winter. Due to the cool weather, many fruits that do not grow in tropical climates can be grown here, which makes it a very diverse agricultural region.

The InteRDom program contributes to the training of students and professors who are interested in acquiring professional experience in relevant aspects of development in the Caribbean region.

Through regular cultural activities, InteRDom provides participants with opportunities to experience and learn about the natural attractions and biodiversity of the Dominican Republic.

InteRDom is the internship and academic exchange program of the Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD) and its sister organization in the Dominican Republic, Fundación Global Democracia y Desarrollo (FUNGLODE).
