InteRDom Contributes to the Internationalization of University Curriculum Through InteRDom PRO

The 4-day event InteRDom PRO: Professional Externship for Professors and Academics, presented in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic by InteRDom Internships in the Dominican Republic, welcomed 6 representatives from United States public and private universities interested in enriching the international curriculums of their institutions with Caribbean—and specifically Dominican—topics. 

They hail from Florida International University, Williams College, University of Rhode Island, the Oregon State University System, City College of New York and the University of Georgia Law School.

InteRDom PRO, which began on March 14th and will conclude on March 18th, opens doors for professors, study abroad and career services representatives to learn what the region has to offer students in terms of their professional and academic development.  The Dominican Republic’s rich history, cultural and ecological diversity and rapid economic development make it a unique and valuable site for students to study and contribute to professional projects that will make a direct impact in the social, political and economic development of nations.

The event aims to bring visibility not only of the Dominican Republic and its companies and educational system to college campuses in the United States, but of the American universities in the Dominican Republic.  A number of exchanges are scheduled which will provide PRO participants the opportunity to present their universities and the profiles of their students to Dominican educators and businesspeople as potential partners.

The professors and administrators participating in this activity have shown great initiative in providing rich and thoughtful experiences to their students, which break the mold of traditional study abroad programs.  They hail from Florida International University, Williams College, University of Rhode Island, the Oregon State University System, City College of New York and the University of Georgia Law School.

InteRDom PRO was launched in 2010 as an initiative aiming to introduce university representatives to the facilities, structure and services of the InteRDom program.  But with the expansion of the programs and services offered by InteRDom, the internship program now has even more to offer students and universities, including customized faculty-led field courses, short programs revolving around a range of topics from baseball to Dominican cultural industries to binational economic relations and research programs for undergraduate, Master’s and PhD candidates.

The internship program, InteRDom, a program of the Global Foundation for Democracy and Developme (GFDD) and Fundación Global Democracia y Desarrollo (FUNGLODE) is the premier internship and academic study program in the Dominican Republic. It offers international students the opportunity to obtain professional experience by interning with Dominican organizations and businesses related to their fields of study, complemented by courses and seminars at local universities.
