Preparations Underway for the 2011 Caribbean Summer Program

In just three short weeks, the interns participating in the Caribbean Summer 2011 program will arrive in Santo Domingo, and the InteRDom staff is hard at work finalizing internship proposals, confirming cultural excursions and activities and preparing the student residences.

This summer’s group of interns hails from prestigious universities in the northeastern part of the United States, such as Wesleyan University, Boston College, Pace University and Boston University.  After passing through an extensive application and placement process, the interns have been fully prepared and are ready to begin their internships in Santo Domingo at a variety of local and international organizations.  The sectors in which this year’s interns will be working include medicine and health, international sustainable development, disaster prevention and foreign relations.

One of the main objectives of the Caribbean Summer 2011 is to cultivate InteRDom’s commitment to diversity.  The admissions team has worked hard to ensure that the interns on all of the summer’s programs come from diverse backgrounds and have varied interests.  The cultural activities, internship and externship projects and HOT Summer Seminars will reflect this theme of diversity and the ways that it is manifested in Dominican culture and identity from the effects of its colonial history to its relationship with neighboring Haiti and its present-day foreign trade relations and immigration trends.

The internship program, InteRDom, an initiative of Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD) and Fundación Global Democracia y Desarrollo (FUNGLODE), is the premier internship, research and academic study program in the Dominican Republic. It offers international students the opportunity to research important topics at the forefront of the United Nations agenda, obtain professional experience by interning with Dominican organizations and businesses related to their fields of study and/or earn academic credits by taking courses and seminars at a local university.
