InteRDom, the internship program in the Dominican Republic sponsored by Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD) and Fundación Global Democracia y Desarrollo (FUNGLODE) is pleased to announce new internship opportunities combining two very hot subjects: technology and the environment. InteRDom has partnered with an influential public institution involved in environmental policymaking and implementation on a national scale to provide them interns to work on a nationwide technology and disaster-prevention upgrade program.
InteRDom intern Jodi Curiotto, who arrived in the Dominican Republic at the start of the Fall 2010 semester as part of the Professional Year program, is the first student to participate in this project. Jodi is a graduate of Rutgers University in Mathematics and Psychology, and she will be in the Dominican Republic for a year, dividing her time into two phases: research and implementation.
During the first phase of the project, she will be conducting research on autonomous environmental monitoring systems all over the world; during the second phase she will be providing support in the remodeling of data and communications support systems. Jodi is taking Spanish classes at InteRDom’s partner university, Universidad Iberoamericana (UNIBE), in addition to her internship.
The project in which Jodi is participating is extensive and encompasses many different areas of expertise. It includes modernizing data infrastructure, updating the environmental technology systems, and developing disaster prevention and preparedness programs, which will improve and potentially save, the lives of many people all over the country. Disaster preparedness is currently a very important topic in the region, and a successful upgrade could serve as a model for other islands.
There are many more opportunities in different areas open to students who wish to work on this project in the Spring, Summer and Fall of 2011. To apply for these and other positions, fill out the InteRDom Application Form and send it, along with your resume and cover letter tointerdom@interdominternships.org. The deadline to submit applications for all Spring internships is October 29, 2010.
