InteRDom’s HOT Summer Seminars Begin

InteRDom’s HOT Summer Seminars, a feature of the program’s academic offering, kicked-off on Tuesday, June 30, with a two-day seminar series in conjunction with The World Bank titled “Doing Business in Latin America.”
Doing Business is a multidisciplinary project of The World Bank and the International Finance Corporation, which began in 2003 as a means of analyzing and ranking global business reform. The project uses 10 indicators to measure the efficiency and ease of establishing and running a business in different countries throughout the world.
The first evening of the seminars began with some introductory words by Roby Senderowitsch, Resident Representative of The World Bank in the Dominican Republic, who encouraged students to investigate, ask questions and get active in the formation of public policy to shape the business world of tomorrow.
“Doing Business” representative Jean Michel Lobet subsequently took the stage to present the 10 Doing Business indicators, providing an assessment of how the Dominican Republic measured up in each category in 2008. At the end of the first session, students were divided into working groups of 7 people. Working groups then took the stage on Wednesday, July 1 to present their suggestions for legislative reforms in order to improve the standing of the Dominican Republic in the global Doing Business rankings.
The seminars were attended by over 70 students of Dominican, Haitian and American backgrounds representing various local and international universities, businesses and nonprofit organizations.
InteRDom, an initiative of Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD) and Fundación Global Democracia y Desarrollo (FUNGLODE), is the premier internship and academic study program in the Dominican Republic. The Program offers international students the opportunity to obtain professional experience by interning with Dominican organizations and businesses related to their field of study, complemented by courses and seminars at local universities.
Since its establishment in 2005, InteRDom has had interns from more than 35 international universities. This summer’s interns represent the following universities: Fordham University, Harvard University, George Washington University, Baylor University, Cornell University, SUNY University of Buffalo, Monterrey Institute of International Students and Harvard Kennedy School.
