InteRDom Summer 2017 Interns Begin Their Dominican Experience at GFDD/Funglode Headquarters in Santo Domingo

Santo Domingo – The InteRDom 2017 summer session began on June 5^th at Fundación Global Democracia y Desarrollo (Funglode) facilities in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, where students received information about the program from GFDD Acting Co-executive director Yamile Eusebio. The 2017 InteRDom summer session participants include Viviana Vizcaino, a Business Administration and Economics Major from Baruch College in New York; Sasha Rosado, a Political Science and International Law and Human Rights Major from Joh Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York, and Christian Burlock, who is studying Spanish and Mathematics at Birmingham-Southern College in Birmingham, Alabama.

The interns were provided with general information about their different internships and discussed the various activities planned for the summer. Among the scheduled events are a tour of the colonial area, where students will have the opportunity to visit the Ozama Fortress and the national pantheon, among other museums; a tour of the Dunes of Bani, where they will visit the salt mines; a tour of the Cocoa Trail and a visit to the Mirabal Sisters Museum, in addition to other cultural and educational activities.

After the introduction and a tour of Funglode facilities and the Juan Bosch Library, the students shared a welcome dinner at one of the best Dominican restaurants in the city of Santo Domingo.  On Tuesday, June 6, the interns’ supervisors were welcomed: Luis Brugal of the Cámara Americana de Comercio de la República Dominicana (AMCHAMD); Maria Bizenny of MOSTCHA Inc., and Joaquin Pulgar and Laricsa Bello of the Cybernetic Park of Santo Domingo will be providing the students support and training during their stay in the Dominican Republic.

In addition to daily work and cultural activities that interns will take part in, the students will also have the opportunity to attend weekly GFDD/Funglode events, document their experiences and participate in the InteRDom blog.
