InteRDom 2008 Summer Session Begins

A total of 17 students from 9 universities from different countries will arrive in the Dominican Republic during the coming days to participate in the Summer 2008 Session of InteRDom’s internship program. The official start of the program is June 9th, however, the first student arrived last week from the Political Studies Institute in Toulouse, France.

InteRDom is the premier internship and academic study program in the Dominican Republic. It offers students the opportunity to gain professional experience by interning with Dominican organizations related to their field of study, and take courses and seminars at local universities.

Since it’s established in 2005, some 30 students from international universities have participated in the program. This year, students come from the United States (Amherst University, Florida International University, Fordham University and Stony Brook University), France (Science Po and the Political Studies Institute) and Argentina (Universidad de Buenos Aires).

Among the organizations and businesses that will receive international interns through InteRDom are: the UN International Research and Training Institute for the Advancement of Women (INSTRAW), Universal de Seguros, Falconbridge Dominicana, the United Nations Development Programme/ the Office for the National Coordinator for European Development Funds (UNDP/ONFED), the UNDP Small Grants Program, Fundación Institucionalidad y Justicia (FINJUS – Institutionality and Justice Foundation), World Vision, Pan American Development Foundation and the Organization of American States (OAS).

Projects being realized this summer include:
“Educational Policy in the Dominican Republic”
Ana Winick, Amherst University

“The Relation between Political Parties and Voters in the Dominican Republic”
Edward Gonzales, New School

“Elaboration of Public Policy”
Miguel Hernández, Stonybrook University

First Student
Mascha Wisman, 25 year old student from the Netherlands, was the first student to arrive in Santo Domingo last week. She is presently carrying-out a masters degree in Geopolitics and International Relations from the Political Studies Institute in Toulouse, France, and recently began interning at the UNDP’s Center for Disaster Preparation and Prevention, where she will be contributing to the development of the Dominican Republic and putting in practice her knowledge in the areas of commerce, international relations and humanitarian assistance.
