2013 InteRDom Summer Programs Come to a Successful Close New York, August 15, 2013

The 2013 InteRDom Summer Programs officially ended on Thursday, August 8th with the closing ceremony on the rooftop terrace of Angelo’s Restaurante in Santo Domingo’s historic colonial zone. The interns and their internship supervisors and friends enjoyed an evening of appetizers, while sharing their internship highlights and experiences at the gathering organized by InteRDom to bring together for one last time all of the interns and the people who influenced their time in the Dominican Republic.

The celebration featured a slideshow of photos from the cultural activities, as well as submissions to the InteRDom Summer Photo Contest. Awards were also given out to the photo contest winners: Krysta Villeda, for “Festival in Yamasa” in the Popular Votes category, and Kim Sanchez, for “Fun in Altos de Chavon” in the Judges Choice category. The photography contest was a new feature of the Summer 2013 program, implemented on Facebook in order provide the interns spaces to share the Dominican Republic from their own perspectives.

Both interns and supervisors shared the results of their internships and discussed the impact of the relationships they formed, using PowerPoint presentations and heartfelt speeches.

Over the course of the summer, InteRDom program participants have carried out internships in the fields of: audiovisuals and film production, public health with focuses on diabetes and maternal health, politics and law, environmental studies, community development, education and sports administration, and international and bilateral relations. Along with their internships, the interns had the chance to explore the Dominican Republic through cultural excursions to Ebano Verde Ecological Reserve, a tour of the Colonial Zone, visit to Cuevas de las Maravillas and the Regional Museum of Archaeology at Altos de Chavon, and a Cacao tour. They also attended many networking and professional events at FUNGLODE, including a panel on tax reform and a conference on development.

InteRDom, an initiative of Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD) and Fundación Global Democracia y Desarrollo (FUNGLODE), is the premier internship, research and academic study program in the Dominican Republic. It offers international students the opportunity to research important topics at the forefront of the United Nations agenda, obtain professional experience by interning with Dominican organizations and businesses related to their fields of study and/or earn academic credits by taking courses and seminars at a local university.
