In their first promotional visit to the Atlanta-area, InteRDom representatives were excited to form new connections with faculty and students at Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech), and to strengthen their relationship with the University of Georgia (UGA) on October 23-25, 2013. The agenda for the three-day visit included meetings with faculty, staff and student organizations, and information sessions for students interested in professional development and cultural immersion opportunities in the Dominican Republic.
On Wednesday, October 23, representatives from the InteRDom team forged a new relationship with the board members of Georgia Tech’s La Unidad Latina, Lambda Upsilon Lambda Fraternity chapter, who hosted InteRDom on campus and facilitated a presentation about the program that evening for students interested in international internships in the fields of engineering and computer science. InteRDom is always enthusiastic about working with new student organizations, and supporting them in events and activities on their campuses. InteRDom representatives also met with the director of Georgia Tech’s Language for Business and Technology (LBAT) Program in the School of Modern Languages to discuss the creation of a summer faculty-led program focused on international business in the Dominican Republic through the InteRDom program.
After visiting Georgia Tech, InteRDom representatives headed to the quaint college town of Athens to give an information session to the law students at UGA’s School of Law. This presentation served as a continuation of the strong relationship between InteRDom and UGA Law’s Global Internship program, and summer 2012 program alumnae and current law students, Justine Burke and Antoinette Newberry were in attendance to speak about their internships and answer students’ questions about their experiences. InteRDom owes a special debt of gratitude to María Eugenia Giménez, Associate Director of the Dean Rusk Center for International Law and Policy at UGA, for organizing and co-hosting the event on campus.
Before heading back to New York, InteRDom also had the opportunity to branch out to other departments at UGA and meet with advisors from the Office of International Education and the Latin American and Caribbean Studies Institute to discuss opportunities for their students through the InteRDom program.
InteRDom is now planning its university travel agenda for spring 2014. If you would like for InteRDom to visit your university, please write to students@interdominternships.org.
InteRDom, an initiative of Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD) and Fundación Global Democracia y Desarrollo (FUNGLODE), is the premier internship, research and academic study program in the Dominican Republic. It offers international students the opportunity to research important topics at the forefront of the United Nations agenda, obtain professional experience by interning with Dominican organizations and businesses related to their fields of study and/or earn academic credits by taking courses and seminars at a local university.
