“Internships, Co-op, Experiential Education – Where Next?”—that is the theme to be discussed at the 2014 Global Internship Conference (GIC), to be held from June 10-13, 2014 in Toronto, Canada. InteRDom will join the more than 270 professionals, educators, and researchers at the conference hosted by the University of Toronto in partnership with the Academic Internships Council (AIC) and with academic support from Michigan State University.

The Conference aims to promote internships as an integral part of a student’s college education. The scope of this conference attracts attendees from all over the world who seek to learn more about internships, academic work placement, co-operative education, teaching, and volunteering. As a platform for dialogue, and vehicle for action, the Global Internship Conference brings together colleagues to discuss and advance best practices as well as develop and examine a research agenda for global internships.

High profile lawsuits in Canada and the USA have reopened the debate on the issues of unpaid placements, and in the Dominican Republic and the United States, as in other countries, there is a lively discussion among academics and industry professionals on that same subject. The Global Internship Conference will contribute to the conversation of paid versus unpaid internships, providing the space for participants to express their experiences and knowledge on the subject. In addition to this topic, attendees will discuss best practices and labor regulations for internships, and the expansion of internships into new areas, both academic and geographic.

Through this conference, InteRDom representatives will have the opportunity to network with other global internship professionals, to explore partnerships with other universities, institutions and providers, and to build relationships and collaborate on new ideas.

InteRDom representatives will also attend presentations, panel discussions and workshops on a range of topics from building an online community to enhance the international internship, to students personal branding and cultural preparation for today’s interns. All of these tools will be valuable to continue to innovate in order to provide the highest quality experience possible to future students.

InteRDom is an initiative of Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD) and Fundación Global Democracia y Desarrollo (FUNGLODE), is the premier internship, research and academic study program in the Dominican Republic. It offers international students the opportunity to research important topics at the forefront of the United Nations agenda, obtain professional experience by interning with Dominican organizations and businesses related to their fields of study and/or earn academic credits by taking courses and seminars at a local university.
