City College Students Prepare for Special Summer Program with InteRDom

On Thursday, November 4th, InteRDom visited the City College of New York to give a presentation to interested students on a new 4-week summer program called “Expert in the Spanish Caribbean,” which InteRDom is launching this summer together in collaboration with City College.

About 40 students from all undergraduate study areas came out to see the presentation, watch a video on past InteRDom student experiences and speak with InteRDom representatives about their specific study programs and professional objectives.

The information session was sponsored by the office of Study Abroad, with whom InteRDom has formed a special collaboration to create the Expert in the Spanish Caribbean program, which will be a summer externship and service program specifically for City College students beginning in the summer of 2011.

This special initiative was made possible by Dr. Marina Fernando, the director of International Studies and Study Abroad at City College, who also was a participant in the InteRDom PRO activity in October. Dr. Fernando, who was referred to the program by the CUNY Dominican Studies Institute, saw a need for an international program option in the Dominican Republic due to the high number of Dominican Diaspora students who attend City College, and after seeing InteRDom’s facilities and services in the Dominican Republic she decided to that it would be a good fit.

“My thinking was that the Dominican students at City College … should make a connection with their country and go back to their country and serve,” Dr. Fernando said. “I’m looking for the professional development of my students, and I can think of no better place to do it than in the Dominican Republic.”

More information about the CCNY-InteRDom 4-week summer program will be available in January. Applications are currently being accepted for all other regularly-scheduled 2011 InteRDom programs.

The internship program, InteRDom, an initiative of Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD) and Fundación Global Democracia y Desarrollo (FUNGLODE), is the premier internship, research and academic study program in the Dominican Republic. It offers international students the opportunity to research important topics at the forefront of the United Nations agenda, obtain professional experience by interning with Dominican organizations and businesses related to their fields of study and/or earn academic credits by taking courses and seminars at a local university.
